but I hate the sand<\/p>\n

Salt on my fingers
\nannoys me, too.<\/p>\n
I like french fries,<\/p>\n
like eating them with my fingers.<\/p>\n
I eat a couple<\/p>\n
then wipe, wipe, wipe<\/p>\n
my fingers<\/p>\n
until all the tiny annoying<\/p>\n
grains<\/p>\n
are gone.<\/p>\n
When I was a little girl,<\/p>\n
I refused to play in the mud.<\/p>\n
Apparently all little girls<\/p>\n
like to make mud pies.<\/p>\n
All normal little girls, anyway.<\/p>\n
I did not,<\/p>\n
and that,<\/p>\n
like a grain of sand<\/p>\n
or salt<\/p>\n
annoyed\/worried\/perplexed\/concerned<\/p>\n
my mother.<\/p>\n
So<\/p>\n
one day when I was wearing my<\/p>\n
favorite, frilliest panties,<\/p>\n
she picked me up,<\/p>\n
took me out the door, down the steps, out into the backyard<\/p>\n
and plopped me on my ruffles<\/p>\n
in the mud puddle.<\/p>\n
She still laughs about it,<\/p>\n
the mental image of me crying in the mud.<\/p>\n
I’d forgotten all about it<\/p>\n
until she remembered it to Alison a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n
What’s funny to me is<\/p>\n
how different<\/p>\n
mothers and daughters<\/p>\n
